WOF Checklist: What Mechanics Wish You Did First

A little preparation goes a long way. Using a Warrant of Fitness (WOF) checklist before your inspection can help you avoid a failed WOF, save time, and make the process smoother.

Mechanics don’t necessarily want to find faults, but they often spot simple issues that could be fixed before your WOF. Whether you’re in Auckland or elsewhere in NZ, this guide shows you what to check so you can avoid surprises.

Why Pre-Check Matters

The WOF test is all about safety. Major mechanical problems rarely cause most failures, simple easy-to-fix issues cause them instead.

WOFs follow a standard procedure set by the NZ Transport Agency. Running through a checklist before your visit helps you catch problems early and keeps your vehicle safe on the road.

WOF Checklist for NZ Drivers

Here’s what mechanics wish more drivers checked before a WOF.
  1. Lights, Signals & Indicators
  2. Tyres and Tread Depth
  3.  Windscreen and Wipers
  4. Brakes
  5. Seat Belts
  6. Mirrors and Visibility
  7. Leaks and Fluid Levels

1. Lights, Signals & Indicators

Lighting issues are one of the most common reasons for a failed WOF.

Check that:
  • Headlights (high and low beam) work
  • Brake lights illuminate when pressed
  • Indicators flash left and right
  • Reverse and number plate lights are functional
Even a single blown bulb can cause a failed WOF. Swapping bulbs before your inspection is quick, easy, and often free.

2. Tyres and Tread Depth

Tyres must be in good condition with enough tread. Worn tyres can:
  • Reduce traction
  • Create safety risks in wet conditions
  • Lead to a failed WOF

Look for:
  • Uneven wear or cupping
  • Tread below the legal minimum
  • Cracks or bulges in the sidewall

Replace worn tyres before your WOF to avoid failure.

3. Windscreen and Wipers

Your windscreen must be clear and free of large cracks in your line of sight. Small chips can spread into bigger cracks, especially on uneven roads. Fix them early to avoid costly repairs.

Also check:
  • Wipers remove water effectively
  • Washer fluid sprays properly
  • Wiper blades aren’t cracked or rigid

Good visibility isn’t just a WOF requirement - it keeps you safe on the road.

4. Brakes

Brakes are a critical safety check.

Listen and feel for:
  • Squealing or grinding noises
  • A spongy brake pedal
  • Uneven stopping

If your brakes feel off, get them inspected before your WOF. Reliable brakes are essential for your safety.

5. Seat Belts

Seat belts must:
  • Extend and retract smoothly
  • Lock securely
  • Be free from cuts or fraying

A faulty seat belt will fail the WOF. Test each belt before your inspection.

6. Mirrors and Visibility

Check that:
  • All mirrors are secure and undamaged
  • Your view is clear
  • No obstructions hang from the rearview

Good visibility is essential, especially in city traffic.

7. Leaks and Fluid Levels

Look under your vehicle for:
  • Oil drips
  • Brake fluid leaks
  • Coolant leaks

Fluid leaks can indicate bigger problems and may cause a failed WOF if they affect safety systems.

Can You Go Somewhere Else After a Failed WOF?

Failing a WOF doesn’t mean the end of the road. It means faults need fixing. You can choose where to have repairs done, but the safety standards are the same across NZ.

Ignoring the issues and going elsewhere usually leads to another failed WOF. Fix the problems first to save time and stress.

Ready for Your Next WOF in Auckland?

Many of these checks can be done at home in just a few minutes with a careful eye. But if something doesn’t look right, or doesn’t feel right, it’s best to have it checked by a professional.

That includes your lights, tyres, brakes, or anything else you’re unsure about.

Our Auckland team are fully qualified WOF inspectors with over 100 years of combined experience. We know the standards inside and out, and we’re happy to guide you through the process. With a thorough check, you can avoid unnecessary surprises and drive away with confidence.
